FDA sets new limits on arsenic levels in apple juice

Posted by admin on Jul 15th 2013

Remember when Dr. Oz scared us about Apple Juice because his tests found higher than normal levels of Arsenic? The US Food and Drug Administration responded then Congress got involved. After public pressure, the FDA set a new limit on the acceptable level of arsenic allowed in apple juice.

Under the new regulation the accepted FDA level in apple juice was lowered from 23 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 parts per billion (ppb). The EPA and the World Health Association have the same 10 ppb level for arsenic in drinking water that is consumed in greater quantities. Last year, the FDA found 95 percent of the apple juice samples tested were below 10 ppb total arsenic level; 100 percent of the samples were below 10 ppb for inorganic arsenic the carcinogenic form of arsenic.
